Where Do We Go From Here?

On July 1, 2009, the Financial Accounting Standards Board’s (FASB’s) Accounting Standards Codification™ completely changed the way that U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) are documented, updated, referenced, and accessed. Many CPAs and other accounting professionals had been led to believe that the Codification would have minimal operational impact. But individuals and organizations — particularly small and mid-size companies — are finding the path forward to be anything but smooth. CPAs and other accounting professionals have had to completely re-learn how to identify and cite authoritative GAAP, and in many reporting entities, the Codification has introduced new weaknesses in internal control over financial reporting.

This two-hour live CPE seminar, presented by accounting expert and CCH author Bruce Pounder, will help you process the opportunities and challenges that have emerged in the first 45 days of the “Codification Era” and help you translate lessons learned into best practices for yourself, your employer, and your clients.

Program Topics

Topics to be addressed include:

  • Key implications of the change in how GAAP is organized
  • Debunking common Codification myths and misconceptions
  • Tips and tricks for users of the online Codification Research System
  • Preparing for third-quarter 10-Q filings
  • Resources and strategies specifically for smaller companies
  • How the Codification relates to the FASB’s efforts to converge U.S. GAAP and IFRS

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the major ways in which the Codification is impacting the work of CPAs and other accounting professionals
  • Describe how the Codification integrates and organizes U.S. GAAP
  • Use the features of the online Codification Research System more effectively and efficiently
  • Recognize and avoid new pitfalls in preparing and auditing financial statements

Who Should Attend?

Preparers, auditors, tax practitioners, financial statement users, academics and students preparing to sit for the Uniform CPA Exam.
