Learn the Ins and Outs of First-Time IFRS Adoption

The move to the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) represents a dramatic shift in how U.S. businesses and practitioners will need to approach accounting and financial reporting. The IFRS convergence is not in place yet, but migration from U.S. GAAP is inevitable and the progression toward international standards will ultimately result in one set of standards to be used by all companies inside and outside of the U.S., regardless of size and whether they are publicly or privately held.

Every U.S. company’s first IFRS reporting efforts will undoubtedly be fraught with apprehension as the GAAP/IFRS similarities and differences are worked through. Because of this additional complexity, it is vital that accounting and financial reporting professionals be aware of what’s involved and how best to work through the process of developing a company’s first set of IFRS-compliant financial statements. Just as important, certain simplified standards will be available for smaller, private companies, so it is essential to know when IFRS for private entities is applicable and what that transition will entail.

This practical two-hour audio seminar on Thursday, April 23rd, is the second of three IFRS sessions that highly regarded practitioner, Kathryn Byrne, CPA, is presenting for CCH. This program will take you beyond the IFRS fundamentals as Ms. Byrne will walk through the process of first-time IFRS adoption, focusing on IFRS 1. She will also cover the specific issues pertaining to private entities, as well as provide some comparisons between common items such as consolidation, intangible assets, PPE and inventory. Time will be provided for you to ask your most pressing questions directly to Ms. Byrne via phone or e-mail during the program.

Program Topics

Among the topics to be addressed are:

  • Discuss the scope of IFRS 1 and the first time application
  • Working from “date of transition” through “date of adoption”
  • Optional exemptions and mandatory exceptions
  • Presentation and disclosure issues, including comparatives and transition reconciliations
  • IFRS for private entities, including simplifications and abridged requirements
  • The divergence between accounting items like inventory, impairment of assets, provisions and contingencies

Learning Objectives

  • Develop an effective approach to handle a company’s first IFRS financial statements
  • Become comfortable with the transitional issues from GAAP to IFRS
  • Understand the implications of IFRS for private entities
