MAY 2006

Dear CCH Learning Center Subscriber,

Welcome to the May 2006 issue of Focus on Learning, the monthly newsletter for the CCH Learning Center, in which we provide insights on how to use the Learning Center to your full advantage.  In each issue, we highlight a course or series of courses on a timely topic, as well as advise you of new courses released in the CCH Learning Center.  We also inform you of new features, provide helpful tips on existing features, and help you use the CCH Learning Center to meet your professional development and CPE needs.

What’s New
CCH has added a new library to it growing line of Specialty Libraries. The CCH Learning Center Specialty Libraries are practice-area focused and cover a broad range of levels in the key topics of accounting and auditing, sales and use taxation, and tax return preparation.  You can now search the CCH Learning Center for coverage of topic that interests you, and a new training guide is also available.

State Taxation Library
The State Taxation Specialty Library provides guidance through significant laws, regulations, decisions and issues affecting state taxation. The Library includes more than 25 engaging web-based self-study courses worth more than 60 CPE credits. Written by top experts in the field, these courses provide insight on important or emerging state tax issues, and analyze their impact on compliance and planning.

The courses provide timely coverage, current information and the in-depth analysis you need to stay a step ahead of important state tax issues while still meeting you continuing professional education requirements. The courses also provide planning tips and practice development ideas, along with links to sources of additional information within CCH® Tax Research Network™ (TRN).  Insightful supplementary articles that provide additional information on the course topic, and practice aids to help users apply the knowledge gained are also included in each course.

Participant's Guide
A new Participant’s Guide is now available to all CCH Learning Center users. A link to the guide can be found on the left side of the Learning Center home page under the CCH Learning Center heading. The Participant’s Guide, provided in a ready-to-print PDF, is designed to help new users enroll in, navigate and complete Learning Center courses. The guide also reviews the CPE options available through the Learning Center, defines menu tools and features within the Learning Center and explains how to resume a course.

Now you can quickly find courses covering topics of interest to you on the Learning Center. To search for a topic simply click on the Search for Courses tab on the upper right side of CCH Learning Center. Enter a term, topic or subject into the search and click on Search for a course. Course Spotlight
Auditing Issues: The Sarbanes-Oxley Act: Opportunities for the Profession
In addition to helping you stay current with the latest accounting and tax changes, many courses in the CCH Learning Center strive to provide practical information you can use to grow your practice.  For example, a new course, Auditing Issues: The Sarbanes Oxley Act: Opportunities for the Profession, reviews opportunities created by SOX for CPA firms who wish to provide non-audit SOX services to SEC issuer companies, or "SOX-like" services to non-issuers.  The course reviews four key sections of the Act, as well as the trickle-down effect that the Act has had outside of the SEC issuer universe.

The Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) Act of 2002 creates opportunities for CPAs, auditors, actuaries, and others. Auditing Issues: The Sarbanes-Oxley Act: Opportunities for the Profession is directed primarily to CPA firms who wish to provide non-audit SOX services to SEC issuer companies, or "SOX-like" services to non-issuers. It provides a broad overview of four key sections of the Act that create these opportunities, and focuses attention on Section 404, which creates the need for new compliance-assistance and value-added services. Topics covered include:

  • Section 201 — Prohibited Activities

  • Section 301 — Audit Committees

  • Section 302 — Corporate Responsibility for Financial Reports

  • Section 404 — Management Assessment of Internal Control

  • Marketing considerations
