Learn About IRS Correspondence Audits and How Best to Handle Them

One method for the IRS examination efforts to reach more taxpayers is through the use of correspondence audits — computer-generated examinations where the issues in question should be readily resolved through the mail. Almost 83 percent of the examinations of individuals were done by correspondence during FY 2007. Only 1 of every 561 individual income tax returns filed received a face-to-face examination, while 1 of every 118 received a correspondence examination. The odds are that one or more of your clients will be faced with a correspondence audit and you’ll need to know the proper techniques to best represent your clients when they are tagged by the automated examination arm of IRS.

Join nationally recognized tax practitioner, instructor and commentator, Claudia Hill, EA, M.B.A., on Tuesday, June 30, in a timely and informative two-hour program as she discusses the growing role of correspondence audits and walks through the process from receipt to response. Ms. Hill’s practical approach to handling this type of audit is essential for all tax practitioners whose clients may be subject to the IRS Correspondence Examination Program. Time will be provided to ask questions directly to Ms. Hill via phone or e-mail during the program.
